Bruins acquire Nick Holden from Rangers

It might not be the move Bruins fans were hoping in a trade with the Rangers, but Don Sweeney added a little insurance to the blue-line Tuesday morning.
In a minor deal, the Bruins acquired defenseman Nick Holden from New York in exchange for Rob O’Gara and a 2018 third-round draft pick.
Acquired by the Rangers in a trade with the Avalanche during the 2016 off-season, Holden immediately made an impact with Alain Vigneault’s squad. The 6-foot-4 blue-liner tallied a career-high 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) and a plus-13 rating in 80 games and helped the Blueshirts to a second-round appearance in 2016-17.
While Holden’s production has dropped off since last year — 12 points in 55 games — the trade gives the Bruins some size and depth on the back-end. Holden’s addition, however, gives the Bruins nine defensemen on their current roster. Paul Postma, Kevan Miller and Adam McQuaid are candidates to move elsewhere with the former perhaps going on the waiver wire in a corresponding move.
O’Gara, a Bruins fifth-round selection in 2011, appeared in 11 games with Boston over the last two years. The Yale alum appeared in 117 career games with the Providence Bruins tallying 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists) and a plus-18 rating during his three AHL seasons.
With the Bruins in Edmonton Tuesday night, Holden’s potential debut will likely have to wait until the weekend when Boston concludes its five-game road trip in Toronto (Saturday) and Buffalo (Sunday).
