Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Blue Jackets
Share
The Metro blitz continues.
After back to back losses to the Capitals and Rangers, the Bruins host yet another tough Metropolitan Division opponent in the Blue Jackets Monday at TD Garden.
The Black and Gold stole a point in Columbus after coming back from 3-0 down in the first meeting of the season back on Oct. 30. The top line of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak combined for six points (two goals, four assists) and factored into each of Boston’s three straight goals to force overtime. The Blue Jackets bounced back in the shootout to seal the 4-3 victory.
Unlike all three of their games last week where they allowed the first goal and didn’t hold a lead in regulation, the Bruins need to find a way to get Goal No. 1 and/or play from ahead. That won’t be an easy task against Sergei Bobrovsky and a stingy Blue Jackets D-core that ranks in the top 10 in every major statistical defensive category.

Tonight’s storylines
– After a frustrating night against the Rangers penalty kill, the Bruins power play looks to get back on track in another important contest. Sure, Brad Marchand tied things up on the team’s sixth power play opportunity, but the Black and Gold looked out of sync against a Rangers squad that gave them little room to work with in the attacking end. Whether it’s the top power play unit trying to find chemistry with a returning Ryan Spooner or the two units overthinking things, the Bruins PP needs to click against the Blue Jackets’ fourth-ranked PK unit.
– Head coach Bruce Cassidy inserts the same lineup from Saturday’s game with Jake DeBrusk staying on the second line (for now) and Anders Bjork watching from Level 9. Adam McQuaid’s impending return will change things on the back end. Both Brandon Carlo and Matt Grzelcyk are candidates for Providence once McQuaid (broken right fibula) is activated from injured reserve. Grzelcyk is slowly, but surely finding his footing at the NHL level. Carlo, meanwhile, has hit the sophomore slump, and is ripe for the trip down I-95.
