Bruins riding momentum both at and away from TD Garden

Last season TD Garden was a house of horrors for the Boston Bruins. Going 17-18-6 at home, the Bruins knew they needed to be better on home ice in 2016-17 in order to return to the postseason after a two-year absence.

With Claude Julien behind the Bruins’ bench, much did not change in regards to their home ice advantage, or lack thereof. In 25 home games under Julien this season, the Bruins went 12-13, earning 24 of a possible 50 points. Since interim head coach Bruce Cassidy took over for Julien, the Bruins are 4-0 at home, outscoring opponents 18-7 in that span.

Thursday’s 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes was the Bruins’ fourth straight win on home ice, their longest home streak since November of 2014 where they won six in a row at TD Garden.

What helped the Bruins Thursday night? Patrice Bergeron says it was the momentum built on a successful 3-1 road trip.

“Yeah, I think, you know, we created some confidence on the road, and it seemed like we just told ourselves to go back to what’s been successful [for] us lately, which is keeping things simple and playing a hard game, and we did that after, like I said, that penalty kill and that goal, and it got us going, and after that, we were more poised with the puck but also more assertive, and it made a big difference,” Bergeron told the media following the win over the Coyotes.

After three wins at home in Cassidy’s first three games as the Bruins’ bench boss, they wanted to carry that momentum into their west coast trip. Mission accomplished.

After their key four-game road trip, they wanted to carry that momentum into Thursday night and their ensuing two home games. So far, mission accomplished.

“We’re feeling really good I think. We didn’t play our best game tonight. We know that. But, to come back from the road trip that we had and to get the two points is really what matters,” Brad Marchand said following his team leading 28th goal of the season. “So, we have to continue to build on our game each day, but we’ve been doing that pretty good the past couple of weeks.”

Building on their game each day has been exactly what they’ve done. Since Cassidy took over, the Bruins have led for all but 29:34.

Put the stats aside, just watching the Bruins one can see it’s a whole new team out there on the ice, despite the same names on the back of the jerseys as the season’s opening months.

“Well, clearly, wining has made them feel better about themselves, more confident. I see a group that’s energetic when they come to the rink,” said Cassidy. “I see a group that’s resilient. Now, they certainly had some of these qualities, during the first part of they year. You just see more of it now, and I think winning lends itself to those character traits of the group.”

The Bruins have 12 of their remaining 19 games at home.

    Advantage Bruins.

“Yeah, it’s huge. We know that, if I’m not mistaken, we’re going to play more home games until the end,” said Bergeron. “So we know that it’s going to be important to be good at home, so like you said, you know, those last four [home] games have been the way that we want to play at home.”
