Loui Eriksson adjusting to life in Vancouver

To this day, the Tyler Seguin trade is still an absolute head scratcher. Joe Morrow is the only one remaining from that trade that also included Loui Eriksson, Matt Fraser and Reilly Smith. Morrow has appeared in 65 games with the Bruins since the 2014 trade, with 17 coming this season.

There’s no doubt Eriksson was the biggest name shipped to Boston from Dallas and the former Star certainly contributed in his three seasons with the Black and Gold tallying 62 goals and 147 points. Last season, in his final year of a six-year deal, Eriksson hit the 30-goal mark for the second time in his career.

On Saturday afternoon Eriksson made his return to TD Garden for the first time since signing a six-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks, paying him $36 million over that span.

Eriksson says when it comes to leaving Boston, he has no regrets.

“No, not really. Of course, I liked it here when I played here. I got used to the Boston lifestyle and our family liked it here too,” Eriksson said following his return to Causeway Street. “But I felt like we needed a change and it feels like Vancouver is a great city to live in and a great organization to play for and I am happy where I am right now.”

His first season in Vancouver hasn’t gone to plan for the native of Goteborg, Sweden. Eriksson has just 11 goals and 22 points in 55 games as he and the rest of the Canucks sit six points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the west’s final wild card spot entering Saturday.

“Of course this season hasn’t been the best for me, but I’m still happy we’re pretty close to the playoffs. It was the same thing when I came to Boston,” Eriksson told reporters after Friday’s practice at TD Garden. “Getting to learn new things and new teammates and settled into the city, as well, it takes some time.”

Eriksson has spent most of the season to the right of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, but that hasn’t done much for the former Bruin. Playing alongside Brandon Sutter and Jayson Megna Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Eriksson scored for the first time since January 15th.

On Saturday, he found himself in the same spot as Thursday, just with a different result. Eriksson was a non-factor in Vancouver’s 4-3 loss where he logged 19:33 of ice time, was a minus-2 and had three shots on goal.

“I thought we played really good there at the end of the second, you know it was a tight game through the whole game and I feel like we came back,” Eriksson added. “We got the first goal and then they came back and got the lead and we come back, it’s too bad it ended with a loss.”

Playing in Boston for three seasons, Eriksson is quite familiar with some of the guys he skated against on Saturday. One guy he’s not surprised to see have continued success: Brad Marchand.

“Not really, I think I’ve seen what he can do out there. He’s got great skill and good speed and he can make plays all over the ice,” Eriksson added. “He had a good start there for the World Cup when he started the season with that and he’s been keeping up and he’s been great this season, so I’m happy to see that.”

He might be happy for his former teammate’s success, but, like his first year in Boston, Eriksson is still going through an adjustment period in Vancouver.
