Marchand, Pastrnak step up for desperate Bruins

It’s rare that a January third period goal is as important and meaningful as Brad Marchand’s second of the night was Tuesday night.
His celebration after the goal emphasized that.
In the middle of a season high four-game losing streak – his head coach’s hot seat as hot as ever – and in a contest that saw the Bruins trailing 3-2 almost halfway through the third period, Marchand’s goal was much more than a game-tying tally.
“You know we are in a tough spot right now. We need every point and we have to realize the situation that we are in, and we have to start playing… well we are playing pretty well but we need to start getting wins regardless of how we are playing,” Marchand said after scoring his 18th and 19th goals of the season.

Anytime points are hard to come by and the team is looking for any sort of help in snapping out of their funk, it’s always nice to have your two best scorers put the team on their back, even if it came a little later than the team had hoped for.
David Pastrnak followed Marchand’s lead.
After realizing he had nothing but ice and air around him, Pastrnak stopped just inside the left faceoff circle and fired home David Krejci’s pass for his team leading 20th goal of the season. The overtime winner not only snapped the Bruins’ losing streak, but snapped Pastrnak’s 17-game goal-less drought.
“That definitely felt good. I said that before,” Pastrnak said after the 4-3 win. “Our team, we went in and I think we deserved it today. We were the better team; at least that’s what I think, for most of the game.”

Goals have been hard to come by of late for the Bruins despite a league-leading plus-511 shot differential. For the first time in a long time, the Bruins were able to get timely goals.
Patrice Bergeron and the rest of the Bruins hope that they can take the positives and build some momentum from it.
“I think you need a game to build from and hopefully this is it,” said the Bruins assistant captain. “You know, we were all aware that we were on a four-game losing streak and the bounces weren’t happening and we were almost finding ways to lose and now it’s about realizing that we stuck with it even though we were down by a goal, and maybe the last few games we would have – the result would have been different.”
Concluding their mother-son trip that started with their loss in Pittsburgh Sunday, both Marchand and Pastrnak had their mothers in attendance. It’s safe to say both moms were happy with their son’s performances.
“Yeah, a little disappointed with the way things ended in Pittsburgh, we want to show them a good time, and it’s just a good way to end for them,” added Marchand. “I know they’re all excited and had a lot of fun cheering us on. Good way to end it.”
“That’s the third time she came and the first goal she saw live,” Pastrnak said of his mom. “So, I’m happy for her. She was kind of frustrated too.”
