Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Maple Leafs
Share
The Bruins and Maple Leafs are set to meet Saturday night for the second time this season. The last contest between the two was one the Bruins will want to forget as the Leafs outplayed Boston in a 4-1 victory for Toronto in mid-October.
The Bruins are going to look a little different tonight as Noel Acciari and Danton Heinen have been recalled from Providence and will be in Claude Julien’s lineup tonight. To make room for Acciari and Heinen, Anton Blidh was reassigned to the Baby Bruins.
Saturday night gives Bruins fans the first opportunity to see this year’s No. 1 pick Auston Matthews in person for the first time. The 19-year old Matthews has 19 points in 25 games and is tied with James van Riemsdyk for the team lead in goals with 11. Fellow rookie Mitch Marner has been just as good as Matthews with 19 points in 25 games as well.

Tonight’s storylines:
– After a lackluster performance against the league-worst Avalanche, the Bruins lineup will look a bit different tonight. Out is Jimmy Hayes, Anton Blidh and Colin Miller. In is Danton Heinen, Noel Acciari and Joe Morrow. Claude Julien and company hope that mixing things up a bit will help spark the Bruins who had their six-game point streak snapped Thursday night.
– What will David Pastrnak do next? The Bruins superstar has scored in all but five games he has played in and enters Saturday tied with Sidney Crosby for the league lead in goals with 18. Whether it’s a quick wrister from the slot, a speedy two-on-one or a breakaway, Pastrnak is scoring in many ways and is leading the Bruins offense.
– While still in rebuilding mode, the Maple Leafs are a dangerous team offensively. From Matthews to Marner to Nazem Kadri, the Leafs can put the puck in the net with ease. The Bruins very well know this as they saw it first hand back in October, falling behind 3-0 after three Toronto goals in the game’s first 13:13.
– The Bruins will need a better start Saturday night if they plan on picking up the two points. The B’s have been outscored 4-0 in the first period of their last two games, trailing 2-0 in each. Julien and company were fortunate enough to climb back and earn a point Wednesday in Washington, but couldn’t find the same success Thursday against Colorado. With a record of 10-4-0 this year when scoring first, the Bruins know how important an early lead is and will look to get that elusive first goal against a Maple Leafs team that is 1-7-2 when allowing their opponents to score first.
