The legend of David Pastrnak is growing by the second

So much for Claude Julien and his lack of development of younger talent.

In case anyone needs an example of that myth being busted, David Pastrnak is living proof.

Sure, Pastrnak had some issues during the first two years of his career be it injuries or losing pucks to turnovers. Still, the 2014 first round pick showed glimpses of promise and showcased his potential in the first 97 games of his National Hockey League career.

Enter year three. Now at 20 years of age, things are coming full circle for Pastrnak. He’s on the top line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. He’s becoming more responsible with his puck and not dwelling on past mistakes.

Most of all, he’s providing the spark for a Bruins team looking to advance to the postseason after a two-year absence.

“Well, I guess we’ll clarify something; we’ve never had a rope on him,” Julien said following Pastrnak’s game-winner in the Bruins’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Panthers. “What we wanted from him in the past was managing the puck, not turning it over, and being stronger in that. But we always gave him the opportunity to be creative and then smart about it, which is what he’s doing right now. So, sometimes you have to learn the hard way about those things, that you can’t just throw a bunch of blank passes and hope that they’re going to get in and that’s what was happening a lot in the past, so we were kind of working with him about making sure he was making the right plays.

“When a guy is creative like that, every once in a while the plays aren’t going to work and you’re going to get those kind of things, but more than often, he’s making the great plays, so you work with that. So, I think he’s just coming into his own and it’s not what he was told not to do before and what he can do now. It’s more about him growing into the player that I think everybody anticipated him to be.”

Case in point, Monday night. Despite turning the puck over on a couple of occasions, Pastrnak stayed in the moment scoring twice to tie a career high with 15 goals (through 21 games) that he notched last year through 51 games.

It wasn’t just the two goals that has The Hub buzzing, though. His overtime winner is another example of how he’s making plays with or without the puck.

Early into overtime, Pastrnak, skating with David Krejci and Brandon Carlo during the 3-on-3 portion, tracked back to the center ice area with the puck in the Panthers’ end. Gaining speed through the neutral zone and into the Bruins attacking end, Pastrnak took the feed from Krejci past the Florida defense and quickly gained speed on Roberto Luongo. In one move, Pastrnak got Luongo down on his knees and roofed it past the Panthers stalwart between the pipes.

    Game. Set. Match.

“I saw Krech [Krejci] had a lot of time so I wanted to pick up the speed outside the zone,” Pastrnak said about his game-winner. “Krech kind of, when he turns to the blueline he told [me] I’m there, so he tried to pass to me and then he said he saw me outside the zone so he held onto it, and yeah, he made a good play.”

For all of the concerns of the Bruins developing their youth, they have a special player blossiming into one of the young prolific goal scorers in the NHL.
