Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Flames
Share
After an ugly 3-1 Thanksgiving night loss to the Ottawa Senators in Canada’s capital city Thursday night, the Bruins return home for their annual Black Friday home game, this time hosting the Calgary Flames.
The Flames will be without former Boston College Eagle Johnny Gaudreau who had finger surgery earlier this month. Calgary is coming off a 2-0 shutout of the Columbus Blue Jackets Wednesday night.
The Bruins are expected to once again be without captain Zdeno Chara who is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury. According to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal, Anton Khudobin did not make the trip to St. John’s for the Providence Bruins contest Friday night meaning he may be back with the NHL club in time for tonight’s matchup.

– A pair of familiar faces will return to TD Garden Friday night. Former Bruins’ defenseman Dougie Hamilton will return to TD Garden for the second time since being traded to Calgary two summers ago. Hamilton has struggled so far since the trade and once again has been the subject of trade rumors. Through 22 games, Hamilton has 10 points and is a minus-2. The other familiar face the Bruins will see will be between the pipes as Chad Johnson gets the nod for Calgary tonight. The start will be Johnson’s sixth in the team’s last seven games as Brian Elliott has gotten off to a rough start. Johnson is 4-1 in his last five starts, allowing just six goals in that span. In his 10 starts this season, Johnson has a record of 6-3-1.
– David Pastrnak returned to the lineup Thursday night and was slotted in his usual spot to the right of Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. Pastrnak scored the Bruins’ lone goal and showed no signs of being rusty after missing three games with a upper-body injury. The Bruins have had issues putting the puck in the net this season and the return of Pastrnak should help the cause.
– If Chara is indeed out tonight, the Bruins have to be better in their own zone than they were last night. Between being in their own zone for long periods of time to the costly turnovers, it was a night to forget for Claude Julien and his club. The Flames also have issues lighting the lamp, and a contest with Calgary could be exactly what the doctor ordered for a struggling blue line.
