Game Day Preview: Rangers at Bruins

With a little momentum on their side, the Boston Bruins return to TD Garden having won three in a row. Tonight they welcome the red-hot Rangers who handed the Bruins their last loss in a 5-2 triumph at Madison Square Garden 10 nights ago.

Untimely penalties ultimately doomed the Bruins in the last meeting as they handed the Rangers six consecutive power play opportunities. The Blueshirts scored twice on the man advantage — both in the second period — including their go-ahead goal from Brandon Pirri late in the middle stanza.

Although the Bruins penalty kill has been one of their strengths this season, the last thing that Claude Julien needs to see from his team are more trips to the sin bin if they want to snap their three-game losing streak against their Original Six counterparts who lead the league in goals scored with 45.

“That game I was very clear that penalties pushed us out of the game,” said Julien, who saw his team get off to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. “For the first 30 minutes of the game, I thought we were the better team and playing well and then six penalties in a row just took it away from us.”

Unlike the last meeting, the Bruins will have Tuukka Rask, who is arguably off to his best start of his career with a 6-0-0 record, 1.48 goals against average and .951 save percentage. The 2014 Vezina Winner is 9-5-3 all-time against the Rangers with a 2.10 GAA and .930 SV%.

Another body missing from the Rangers game is also set to return. David Backes, who missed the last five contests due to an elbow procedure, skated with his teammates at Warrior Ice Arena for the morning skate.

    Tonight’s storylines

    – After putting Bruins fans on edge throughout the summer before opting to sign with the Rangers, Jimmy Vesey will make his first Garden appearance in the aftermath of his summer decision. So far, Vesey’s decision is paying off as the 2016 Hobey Baker Winner and former Harvard standout has nine points on six goals and three assists in his first 11 games. The Charlestown native tallied a goal and an assist against the B’s the first time and would like nothing more than a similar performance in front of fellow friends and family that will be in attendance tonight on Causeway Street.

    – Following their unlikely shootout goals in Tampa on Thursday night, linemates Jimmy Hayes and Riley Nash are hoping to build off their heroics during the 10 rounds of the glorified skills competition. The two will either be joined by Austin Czarnik or Matt Beleskey, who was a healthy scratch against the Lightning. With the third line still without a single point on the season, even the slightest of contributions was a welcoming sight for Bruins fans on Thursday night.

    – Another positive that came out of Thursday night was the Bruins power play. With Ryan Spooner’s goal, the Bruins notched their first goal on the man advantage since their 4-2 loss to the Canadiens exactly two weeks ago. The power play finished 1-for-4 on the night and looked fairly effective for the most part moving the puck more fluidly than they had all season long. With Backes and David Pastrnak back in the saddle, the Bruins power play is beginning to take shape again. Whether they stay efficient or not is a different story.
