Elbow healed, enthusiastic Backes set to return vs. Rangers

BRIGHTON — The Bruins are set to have a big body return to their lineup.

After missing the last five games following an elbow procedure to remove an olecranon bursa, David Backes is set to make his return to the Bruins in time for tonight’s contest against the Rangers at TD Garden.

Although Backes skated for the first time with his teammates, the veteran power forward got a couple of extra sessions in with the strength and conditioning staff at Warrior Ice Arena while the Bruins were on the road. Nearly two weeks removed from the procedure, the elbow is acting appropriately following the healing process.

“It’s feeling well. You know, I think physically it felt well a couple of days ago or a week ago, but you have to let everything calm down and let the smart guys that went to all the schooling and advise when mediaclly it’s advisable to get back in the game,” Backes said to the dozens of reporters around his locker following the morning skate.

Backes return is coming at a pretty good time too as the Black and Gold return home fresh off winning three in a row against the Red Wings, Panthers and Lightning to close out their four-game road trip. Their only setback came against the same Rangers squad 10 nights ago at Madison Square Garden, 5-2, on the second game of a back to back that also included a 5-0 loss to the Wild on Causeway Street.

The former St. Louis Blue skated with Ryan Spooner and David Krejci during the morning skate. He expects his role to stay the same upon his imminent return to the lineup.

“Just like when I got here a month ago. I want to be a complimentary piece and do my part and help win games,” Backes said. “I think that’s the mentality that started to sink in following the two games [against the Wild and Rangers] that weren’t real pretty back to back, and this new kind of identity that’s been established on this road trip can carry a long way and that’s the identity that wins games in this league.”

The Bruins’ success on the tail end of the road trip gave Backes a reason to smile and give congrats to his teammates for a job well done.

Backes and company hope that the footprint from their most recent swing away from TD Garden can lead to better things.

“Great to be on the ice with the guys again today,” said Backes, who has a pair of goals and assists in his first five games with his new team. “Great to see all the faces and trying to compliment each and every one of them on the job that they’ve done in the past couple of games of finding ways to win. The difference between winning those and losing those can be a difference in [making the] playoffs or not at the end of the year. You find a way to win them ugly and learn some lessons along the way. That’s a great way to learn.”
