Pastrnak suspended two games for hit on Girardi

BRIGHTON — For the first time in his career, David Pastrnak got a call from the NHL Player Safety Department. On Friday, the league revealed its verdict and it’s not the best of news for Pastrnak and a Bruins team that is in midst of a three-game losing streak.
Pastrnak, who earned a two-minute minor penalty for an illegal check to the head on Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi during Wednesday’s 5-2 loss at Madison Square Garden, was handed a two-game suspension from the league’s disciplinary office in New York. As part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Pastrnak will forfeit over $10,000 of his salary.
“It is important to note on this play that Girardi was eligible to be checked in a legal fashion,” the league stated in its video ruling. “However, rather than staying low and hitting through his opponents body, Pastrnak unnecessarily extends up and into this hit picking the head and making it the main point of contact. In addition, while Girardi is moving as Pastrnak approaches him he does not materially change the position of his head or body just prior to or simultaneously with contact in a way that significantly contributes to the head being the main point of contact.”
Prior to the ruling, head coach Claude Julien met with the media and was asked about the Pastrnak incident. Judging from his response, it’s safe to assume that the 10th year Bruins bench boss respectfully disagrees with the league.
“To me I see a guy where his feet were still on the ice,” Julien said after Friday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena. “I always have an issue with, you know, sometimes players are in vulnerable positions. Sometimes it’s their own doing and sometimes it’s part of the game and you do what you have to do there. But I don’t think there was any attempt to injure the player; I think there was an intent to finish the check.”
Pastrnak will accompany the team on the Bruins’ next road swing through Detroit, South Florida and Tampa. He will miss the first two games against the Red Wings and Panthers and is eligible to return to the Bruins lineup Thursday night versus the Lightning.
