Game Day Preview: Wild vs. Bruins

The Bruins situation in goal just got a lot worse. With Tuukka Rask still nursing a lower-body injury, the Bruins announced Tuesday morning that Anton Khudobin is out for three weeks with a upper-body injury leaving Providence Bruins goalies’ Malcolm Subban and Zane McIntyre as the B’s one-two punch for at least a few days.

Subban’s only NHL appearance came in a start against the St. Louis Blues during the 2014-15 season. The 2012 first rounder was pulled in the second period after allowing three goals on six shots. Subban’s start in Providence has been one he wants to forget as Subban has failed to pick up a win in four games. Subban has a 4.50 goals-against average and a .846 save percentage in the AHL this season.

It appears Subban will get a chance at redemption tonight against the Minnesota Wild.

To make matters worse for the Bruins, second line winger David Backes will not play tonight after missing morning skate and has been deemed day-to-day by head coach Claude Julien. And finally for a bit of good news, it appears that Adam McQuaid will make his season debut tonight, returning from an injury that caused him to miss the Bruins’ first five games.

    Tonight’s storylines:

    – Well, the Bruins are about to find out how mentally tough they are. With Rask and Khudobin both out due to injuries, the Bruins will turn to Malcolm Subban, asking the rookie to keep the Bruins afloat. Subban’s last, and only, NHL start was ugly as he was pulled in the second period of a loss to the Blues a season ago. Subban has struggled in Providence this season and hasn’t done much to show anyone that he belongs in the National Hockey League. Zane McIntyre should be in line to make his NHL debut tomorrow night in New York.

    – Outside of their top line, the Bruins have struggled to put the puck in the net, and that won’t get any easier tonight against a stout Wild d-core. The Bruins will be without David Backes tonight which only makes things worse. After calling them out following Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, Julien’s third line looks a bit different tonight as Ryan Spooner will center Dominic Moore and Jimmy Hayes. Moore and Spooner scored the Bruins’ two goals Saturday and Julien hopes they can carry the momentum into tonight’s contest.

    – Five games in and the Bruins still have not scored the first goal of the game in any of their contests. With Subban in net and the Bruins now down a key forward, playing from behind will be even more difficult tonight. The Bruins will look to score first and find some early momentum against the Wild.
