Bruins keep Eriksson, add Liles and Stempniak on quiet deadline day

So much for the Bruins making any sort of splash on a quiet trade deadline day.
As a matter of fact, they might as well keep the status quo for the rest of the season.
On a day where Don Sweeney could’ve really sped up the retooling process, the Bruins General Manager instead kept his team in quicksand. On a day where Loui Eriksson wasn’t moved, ‘Trader Don’ acquired the Devils’ leading scorer Lee Stempniak and defenseman John-Michael Liles from the Hurricanes — both pending UFA’s at the end of the season.
But at what cost did Sweeney dampen the Bruins retooling process? Well, judging by the two trades itself, it might have put his team in a little bit of a hole.
In the trade with Liles (21 points in 60 games with the Hurricanes), who at 35 is far from his prime, the Bruins parted ways with a third (2016) and fifth round pick (2017) and prospect Anthony Camara. In acquiring Stempniak (33), the Devils’ leading scorer entering the trade deadline with 41 points (16 goals, 25 assists), Sweeney gave up another pair of draft picks — a second rounder in 2016 and a fourth round selection in 2017.
Just hours after Zac Rinaldo was assigned to Providence, Sweeney, who gave up a 2017 third round pick for Rinaldo, have now dealt five draft picks in less than 12 months on the job.
In the short-term, the Bruins might have made minor upgrades at best. In the long run, however, Sweeney, Bruins President Cam Neely and the rest of the front office may have some problems trying to improve the team’s future.
