Game Day Preview: Bruins at Wild

Fresh off their win in the first of their season-long six-game road trip, the Boston Bruins look to make it two in a row this afternoon as they travel to Minnesota to face a struggling Wild squad that has only won once since January 9th.

Patrice Bergeron put the B’s on his back in Winnipeg on Thursday with two goals and a fight against former teammate Blake Wheeler in a little over 14 minutes of ice time. The 6-2 win might have come at a cost, though, as Bergeron suffered an undisclosed injury against the Jets. Although he did not leave the ice, the Bruins’ assistant captain is questionable for today’s game in St. Paul.

Landon Ferraro slotted at center during yesterday’s practice with Brad Marchand and Brett Connolly — and even skated a couple of shifts with the second line wingers with Bergeron getting some rest after the game was out of reach. Joonas Kemppainen was recalled from Providence yesterday and is available to suit up this afternoon for Claude Julien and company.

Matchup to watch: Bruins offense vs. younger Wild defense

With the trade deadline two weeks from Monday, the Bruins will get a good look at some of the Wild’s young and talented defensemen. Marco Scandella and Matthew Dumba will be a couple of interesting names to watch as both have been rumored to be on the block. The duo provides a pretty good two-way presence, and should log some good minutes with injuries to Jonas Brodin (broken foot) and Jared Spurgeon (day to day with a bone bruise).

In need of a young, top-4 blueliner, GM Don Sweeney is getting some pretty good looks on this trip. On Thursday, he got to witness Jacob Trouba’s game first hand. That will continue today with Scandella and Dumba. Whether Sweeney pulls the trigger on any of those three players remains to be seen, but, at least, he’ll have an idea of how they may look in Black and Gold.

Storyline to watch: How will Bruins look if Bergeron doesn’t play?

Bergeron is one of only three Bruins who have dressed in all 54 games this season. Only two would be left with that honor — Loui Eriksson and Ryan Spooner — if Bergeron doesn’t dress.

The bigger picture here is how the Bruins will look without Bergeron. Without the leading point producer, guys like Marchand — who rides a career best 11-game goal streak heading into Saturday — Spooner, Eriksson, Connolly, Matt Beleskey and Landon Ferraro will have to pick up the slack.

Without David Krejci, another key cog, the Bruins were up and down without one of their top offensive weapons. Without Bergeron, arguably the B’s most valuable asset, the Black and Gold will be in a tough spot if he were to miss any extended amount of time.
