Game Day Preview: Predators at Bruins
Share
The Boston Bruins took four of a possible six points on their three-game trip to Western Canada. But they have little time to rest and reflect as, just 48 hours after their impressive 4-0 win in Vancouver, they’re right back to work.
Tonight, the Black and Gold welcome the Nashville Predators, who are just 3-5-2 in their last 10 games. Head coach Peter Laviolette and company are coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the Red Wings; a game that saw the Preds blow a 4-2 third period lead on Saturday night.
Adam McQuaid, who left Saturday’s game after getting hit in the left arm while blocking a shot, took part in the morning skate and is a game-time decision.
Jonas Gustavsson, who was pulled in Calgary Friday night after allowing three goals on eleven shots, will get the start between the pipes. In four career games against the Predators, ‘Goose’ is 2-0-1 with a 2.63 goals against average and a save percentage of .915. Those numbers might not light the world on fire, but the Swede got the job done in his appearances against Nashville.

Matchup to watch: Josi-Weber pairing vs. Bergeron or Krejci line
Even with a second-year coach in Laviolette who likes an up-tempo brand of hockey, these are still words you don’t often hear in Nashville: the Predators being in the bottom half of the league defensively.
Granted they have some very solid two-way defensemen, including the top pairing of Shea Weber — fresh off his first career hat trick in Detroit — and Roman Josi. They’ll have the task of facing either the Bergeron or Krejci line tonight.
The Predators are tied for 16th in the league with the San Jose Sharks in goals allowed per game on average with 2.62. Over the last nine games, the Predators have allowed 29 goals and won just two of those. They have also fallen to 29th in the league on the penalty kill. Those numbers don’t match up well against a Bruins squad that has the top power play in the league (30.6 percent success rate) and an offense that is fourth in goals (82) and third in average goals per game (3.28).
The Weber-Josi pairing is still very solid, however, and are capable of shutting down the opponents top line on any given night. But if the Krejci or Bergeron trio(s) find success against the Preds top pairing, then that will go a long way.
Storyline to watch: Home sweet home
The last time the Bruins were at home, they played the Rangers in arguably one of their best efforts of the season in front of their home fans. Even though they have won three straight at TD Garden — and four of their last five — they still are looking for consistency on Causeway Street.
Following a dominant effort against the Canucks, the Bruins, who have points in eight straight games, are looking to build off the momentum they established in Vancouver. Sticking to the game plan — getting pucks deep, win battles for loose pucks and set layers in all three zones — will likely result in a positive outcome, much like it did against the Canucks.
