Prust fined $5,000 for spearing Marchand in the “fun spot”

Brad Marchand began his 400th game by scoring his 13th goal of the season. It ended with a Brandon Prust spear to Marchand’s lower body area that we can only describe as not safe for work.

On Sunday, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety fined Prust $5,000 for his actions late in the third period of the Bruins’ 4-0 triumph over the Canucks. The money from the fine will go directly to the league’s Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

No one quite knows what led to Prust spearing Marchand. But we do know that Marchand had a jab of his own afterwards.

“He just kind of gave me a jab and got me in the ‘fun spot’,” Marchand told reporters about Prust’s actions that earned him a 10-minute misconduct.

After hearing about the NHL’s decision, Prust responded in a way that would only make former Canucks coach and current Rangers bench boss Alain Vigneault proud.

“Best money I’ve ever spent,” Prust told the Vancouver media at Sunday’s practice. “I kind of thought that was going to happen. It wasn’t hard, and he sold it pretty good. I saw him laughing on the bench after, so I don’t think he’s too hurt.”

Indeed, Marchand wasn’t too damaged from Prust’s antics. He did skate one last shift in the last moments of the third period before celebrating the victory with his teammates.

Prust question aside, Marchand, who has eight goals in his last nine games, grinned about playing in his 400th win and took more satisfaction in commenting to the media on the win to close out the Bruins’ three-game road trip to Western Canada.

“It was a great milestone, and it was great to get a win in the process,” Marchand told the press inside the visiting dressing room at Rogers Arena. “You know, hopefully, there’s many more memories to come and just another memory along the way.”

Marchand may have another memory to discuss when Prust and the rest of the Canucks come to the TD Garden on January 21st.
