Weekly 3 Stars: Thanksgiving Edition
Share
Tis the season for Bruins fans to be thankful.
Sure, this year’s version of the Black and Gold is a team in transition. But they find themselves third in the Atlantic Division following their gutsy 3-2 overtime win over the Red Wings last night in Detroit, and that can serve as a good omen. Last year 13 of the 16 playoff teams who were in the top eight of their respective conferences advanced to the postseason. The only three squads that missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs were the Bruins, Maple Leafs and Kings.
That is a story for another day. For now, we reveal three players that Bruins fans should be thankful for on this special Thanksgiving Day edition of Weekly 3 Stars.
***David Krejci
“To me, you get a healthy David Krejci, you got a different team,” head coach Claude Julien said right before the start of the 2015-16 season.
Well, Claude, that is a pretty accurate statement.
A year after suffering numerous injuries, Krejci is healthy and productive through the first quarter of 2015-16. The Czech started his campaign by tallying a point in nine straight games and earned the NHL’s third star for the month for October.
Krejci has cooled off a little bit in November tallying just eight points (one goal, seven assists) in eleven games. He remains in a five-way tie for ninth in the NHL in points with 23. Still, Krejci’s presence has provided a lift for a Black and Gold team that leads the league in power play percentage (30.8) and is fourth in goals scored (68). At this rate, he should get some recognition for the Masterson Trophy.
** Loui Eriksson
Through concussions and inconsistent play, it took Loui Eriksson a little while to provide the production that Bruins fans were hoping for when he was acquired in the infamous Tyler Seguin trade. Because of that July 4th, 2013, blockbuster transaction, both Eriksson and Seguin will be linked together for the foreseeable future.
In his third year donning the Spoked B, Eriksson is providing that production that Bruins fans were hoping for. He is second on the team in goals with nine, one behind Brad Marchand and his 19 points are good for third, trailing only Krejci and Patrice Bergeron (20).
But it’s the things that aren’t shown on the stat sheet in which Eriksson is thriving. He is skating hard, moving his feet, crashing the net and providing a solid two-way presence on a nightly basis. All of those attributes are a good reason why Julien bumped him up to skate with Krejci, and the two are clicking nicely.
* Patrice Bergeron
By now, there’s no surprise about whom Bruins fans should be most thankful.
From game-winning goals to his three Selke Awards and his stellar all-around play, Patrice Bergeron continues to impress. As a three zone player, he does everything well, and off the ice he continues to demonstrate his humbleness and generosity to the City of Boston through meet and greets and other community efforts.
Words don’t do justice for what Bergeron has meant to the Boston Bruins. B’s fans have every reason to cherish his moments.
Honorable mentions – Brad Marchand, Jonas Gustavsson, Zdeno Chara, Tuukka Rask, Torey Krug, Claude Julien
