What we learned: Bergeron still Bergeron, Rinaldo still Rinaldo

On Wednesday night at TD Garden, the Bruins were looking for their third win in a row and first on home ice.

Holding a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes that saw the Bruins play pretty darn well, the wheels fell off in the third. Two Flyers third period tallies forced overtime and Claude Giroux’s second goal of the game capped off the comeback win.

Let’s take a look at what we learned in the Bruins 5-4 overtime loss.

Now a father, Patrice Bergeron is still Patrice Bergeron

After missing morning skate this morning at TD Garden due to the birth of his first child — a baby boy named Zack — Bergeron was in the Bruins lineup Wednesday night as the Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers on rivalry night. No. 37 certainly didn’t miss a beat.

Down a goal in the first period and the Bruins’ league-best power play unit on the ice, Bergeron battled home a floating puck for his fourth goal of the season. All four of Bergeron’s goals this season have come on the man advantage. The Bruins’ assistant captain now leads the league in power play goals and is tied with Torey Krug and David Krejci for the lead league in power play points with five.

After the loss Bergeron admitted it was hard to focus on hockey after the birth of his son.

“A little bit. It was more the trying to find a way to get myself ready even though I only had an hour of sleep,” said Bergeron. “I was trying to just think about hockey, and that’s the only way you can really go about it and try to be professional. But it’s definitely special tonight to score that goal, and keeping the puck, it’s something very tough to describe, but we’re a happy family right now.”

Bergeron told the media after the game he will give the puck he scored with tonight to his son.

Zac Rinaldo is still Zac Rinaldo

If you had six games in the how many games will Zac Rinaldo play until he is suspended pool, you win. As the first period ended in Wednesday’s contest, Rinaldo drilled Flyers’ forward Sean Couturier into the boards with a high, hard hit. Further review of the hit and it seems as if Rinaldo’s shoulder caught Couturier’s jaw. The Flyer did not return after the hit and Rinaldo was given a game misconduct.

“I’ve got no comment about the call or anything like that,” Rinaldo said. “I guess I just tried to deliver a clean body check and that’s what I thought I did.”

Rinaldo — who met with the league last week to discuss borderline hits — was teammates with Couturier in Philadelphia. Knowing he has a history of suspensions, the Bruins fourth line winger is worried his suspension resume is going to hurt him here.

“Oh yeah, for sure I am. You were about to say my history and stuff like that. But like I said, I thought I did the best I can to stay within the rules and deliver a clean body check” Rinaldo added.

Rinaldo has been suspended three previous times since entering the National Hockey League. Rinaldo has missed 14 total games due to suspensions. Expect that number to increase after Wednesday’s hit.
