Jay Pandolfo prepares to run Bruins Development Camp for first time

For the first eight years of the Boston Bruins Development Camp, Don Sweeney was in charge of getting future Bruins for conditioning and on-ice training during the hot summer months.
Now in its ninth year, Sweeney, a couple of months removed from being named the new GM of the Black and Gold, has given the Development Camp duties over to another former Bruin, Jay Pandolfo.
Just a couple years removed from hanging up his skates, Pandolfo gets his first chance of running the four-day program for the recent crop of Bruins prospects, including 2015 first round picks Jakub Zboril, Jake DeBrusk and Zachary Senyshyn.
“It’s really exciting. We drafted 10 players this year, so it’s really going to be exciting to see these guys and to kind of get to know them better on a personal basis,” Pandolfo said about this year’s Development Camp that begins on Tuesday at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington. “We’re excited to see all these guys.”
Eight months after he announced his retirement, Pandolfo was hired by former B’s General Manager Peter Chiarelli to be the team’s Development Coach. He spent last season helping Bruce Cassidy and his coaching staff down in Providence.
During his season in Providence, Pandolfo learned a few things from Cassidy and Sweeney in his first year in management. And he’s hoping to carry over those lessons learned into this week’s Development Camp.
“Donny started this program and he’s done this for nine years. He’s been a huge help as well as some of the other people involved that have really helped me develop and made this possible. It’s made things a lot easier for me,” Pandolfo said after Friday’s BC-BU charity game to benefit ALS research.
“It’s nice to start off and kind of get involved with it and see where it’s going to go. I really enjoyed it and really enjoyed going down to Providence and working with players down there. Bruce Cassidy and the staff do an unbelievable job down there and they were so welcoming to me and helping me out and made things really easy.”
From notable departures (Milan Lucic, Carl Soderberg and Dougie Hamilton) to new arrivals (Jimmy Hayes, Matt Beleskey and Matt Irwin), the Bruins roster is going to look quite different in 2015-16.
Still, there’s going to be opportunities for some prospects to impress this week, and perhaps they’ll have a chance to do it again come September during training camp.
“You want these guys to make it difficult on management and coaches to make decisions,” Pandolfo said. “You want guys to show up at training camp and fight for a job. That’s what you want to see out of these kids and they’re getting closer and knocking on the door. So that’s what we want to see.”
From David Pastrnak to Ryan Spooner to Zach Trotman and before them Malcolm Subban, Tyler Seguin and Hamilton, there have been plenty of Bruins that have stepped on the ice at Development Camp. This year’s crop of prospects, including the three first rounders as well as Noel Accari and Zane McIntyre, hope to make a good first impression for Pandolfo and the rest of the B’s brass.
