Game Day Preview: Bruins at Senators

The Boston Bruins are coming off one heck of a weekend beating the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime 3-2 highlighted with two goals by Brad Marchand and a 5-3 victory over the Red Wings where their special teams played a significant role.
On Saturday, Marchand redirected a Dougie Hamilton shot from the point with less than 15 seconds in regulation to force overtime where Marchand again lit the lamp to lift the B’s to a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory.
On Sunday, the Black and Gold scored two power-play goals while also scoring two short-handed goals on the afternoon to get a big win against Mike Babcock and the Red Wings. Daniel Paille scored two goals in the victory while he now has four goals in his last six games after being a healthy scratch for two.
The B’s are 5-1-1 in their last seven games and they are hitting their stride at the right time. Tuesday night will be a big test for Claude Julien’s team as they head to Ottawa to face the red-hot Senators.
The Senators are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and most recently have a three game win streak. They trail Boston by just five points for the eight seed with a game in hand.
The B’s have not lost to the Sens in regulation this season beating them 4-2, losing in a shootout and losing in overtime. All three contests were held at TD Garden. Tuesday night will be the first time the Black and Gold travel to Ottawa.

Who to watch for Bruins: Brad Marchand
When David Krejci went out with a partially torn MCL, one player needed to emerge from the group and carry this team offensively. Well, Marchand has done that and then some. He willed the Black and Gold to victory on Saturday before undressing Jonas Gustavsson on Sunday to give the B’s an early 1-0 lead.
Marchand is clicking on all cylinders as of late. Over his last four games, the left-winger has accumulated five goals and an assist while sporting a plus-4. The B’s have taken seven out of a possible eight points in those four games.

The 26 year-old now leads the B’s in goals with 22 and only trails Bergeron for the team lead in points (tied with Eriksson). His speed and skill has been on point as of late and with the B’s racking up the penalties recently, it’s surprising to see Marchand not being the culprit.
You can’t score goals when you are sitting in the penalty box and as of late, Marchand is playing disciplined hockey resulting in his recent success.
Who to watch for Senators: Erik Karlsson
While the Senators are knocking on the door of the Black and Gold, Karlsson is racking up the points.
The 24 year-old defenseman has 16 goals and 34 assists on the season leading his team with 50 points. Over his last five games, the Swede has two goals and three assists. Karlsson isn’t afraid to shoot either as he ranks fifth in the NHL with 229 shots this season.
In his career against the Bruins, Karlsson has four goals and eight assists in 25 games while sporting a minus-9. He is an offensive-minded blue liner and the B’s can’t be afraid to attack him.
Game Day Edge: Build off weekend
The B’s had an emotional weekend taking a possible four out of four points against stiff competition at TD Garden. It will not get easier as they will travel to face off against one of the hottest teams in the NHL.
Julien and company must stay out of the box and capitalize on the man advantage as they did on Sunday. Special teams are very important right now and if the B’s repeat what they did Sunday, they will have no problem.
All four lines were rolling on Sunday against the Red Wings and that needs to continue on Tuesday night. It’s the biggest game of the season because it is the next one for the Black and Gold, but it’s doubly important because it is against a team that is chasing them in the standings.
