Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Canucks

The Boston Bruins salvaged their five-game road trip in Chicago on Sunday afternoon dismantling the Blackhawks, 6-2.

Patrice Bergeron began the scoring with his 200th career after Reilly Smith had a series of nifty moves that led to a no-look backhanded pass to Bergeron who beat Corey Crawford giving the B’s a 1-0 early first period lead. Loui Eriksson gave the B’s a two goal cushion after tipping Torey Krug’s shot on the power-play later in the period.

In the second period, the Black and Gold went off, something rare considering their issues in the middle 20 all season long. Milan Lucic, Gregory Campbell, Dougie Hamilton and Reilly Smith joined the party each tallying a goal.

Tuukka Rask played a solid game besides the last few seconds at the end of the first period where he committed two penalties. Rask finished with 26 saves and notched his 24th victory of the year.

Now, the B’s will turn their attention to the Canucks who they played 11 days ago. The Canucks tormented Claude Julien and company 5-2 behind a hat trick from Shawn Matthias.

But even after the victory over the Blackhawks that salvaged their five-game road trip, the B’s received some bad news on Monday. David Krejci will miss four-to-six weeks with a partially torn MCL in his left knee. Also, Gregory Campbell is now out at least a week with an upper-body injury.

Who to watch for Bruins: Carl Soderberg

Carl Soderberg still ranks third on the team in points with 33, but he’s been ice cold over the past month. The 29 year-old hasn’t scored a goal since January 17th against the Columbus Blue Jackets, a span of 13 games. The Swedish forward also has just two goals in his last 21 games.

Soderberg has missed some scoring opportunities over the last few weeks and hasn’t recorded a point in eight straight games. In his last six games, Soderberg has sported a minus-5 rating with just 12 shots on net in over an average of 17 minutes per contest.

If the Black and Gold want to hold on to that number eight seed in the Eastern Conference and weather the storm without Krejci, their third line center needs to step up his game in a big way.

Who to watch for Canucks: Henrik Sedin

When you face off against the Canucks, the Sedin brothers need to be on your mind. Henrik Sedin has been on a torrid pace as of late. Sedin is now up to 12 goals on the year to go along with 42 assists,  good for third in the NHL.

Over his last five games, the 34 year-old veteran has three goals and five assists. Sedin ripped off 11 shots during that span. He was a non-factor the last time these two teams met, but obviously is always a threat.

The B’s have done a great job of containing Sedin in his career. In 15 games, he has just two goals and five assists while posting a minus-5 rating.

If the B’s can limit Sedin, they should be in good shape as he is their best play-maker.

Game Day Edge: Build off win against Blackhawks

Although the B’s finished 1-2-2 on their five-game road trip, their play toward the end of the trip improved significantly. They blew a three-goal lead against Calgary but played great for two periods. Malcolm Subban did not impress in his debut Friday night in St. Louis, but the team skated well and then they blew out the Blackhawks two days later.

During the last meeting between these two teams, the defense was atrocious. Dennis Seidenberg and Dougie Hamilton each hand wrapped a goal for Matthias in Vancouver. That needs to be a distant memory. Julien’s team needs to play with the fire and balance they did Sunday afternoon at the Madhouse on Madison.

Playing without Krejci will be tough, but as the Black and Gold proved on Sunday, anything is possible.
