Report: Dennis Seidenberg and Loui Eriksson on the market

With the Bruins in midst of their February slump, and the March 2 NHL trade deadline looming, the rumors are starting to heat up in Boston with two veterans rumored to be on the block.
According to Nick Kyperos of Rogers SportsNet, the Bruins are open to trading Loui Eriksson and Dennis Seidenberg to relieve some cap space, and/or try to improve the team for the stretch run.
Seidenberg is coming off a knee injury last December that cost him the rest of the 2013-14 regular season, and has not been the same defenseman since. He signed a four-year contract extension prior last year with a $4 million cap hit and has a full no-trade clause. At the time, it was considered a very good deal, but now that he’s a step slower, the contract is viewed in a different light.
Eriksson, meanwhile, hasn’t been the centerpiece of the Tyler Seguin trade that the Bruins were hoping for. With concussion issues and inconsistent play, the Swedish forward has only produced 68 points in 116 games with the Black and Gold. The former Dallas Star has a $4.5 million cap hit and one more year left on his deal after the 2014-15 season.
The B’s have a little north of $1.7 million in cap space to work with according to NHLNumbers.com. Trading Seidenberg and or Eriksson would provide some cap relief, and perhaps improve their team depending on who Peter Chiarelli can acquire at the deadline. Also to keep in mind, Dougie Hamilton, Torey Krug, Reilly Smith and Carl Soderberg will be looking for new contracts in the off-season and the B’s already have $55 million committed to 12 players for 2015-16 – with an expected league salary cap between $71 and $73 million.
On Boston.com: Buy or sell? Bruins in tough spot at Trade Deadline
With the Panthers win over a hapless Toronto Maple Leafs squad last night, the Bruins only sit two points ahead of Florida for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Black and Gold, losers of four straight and five of six, are in action tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. Let’s just say things could get a lot worse if they extend their losing streak in the third game of their five-game road trip.
