Second period quick hits
It didn’t take long for the Bruins to add to their lead. Just 50 seconds into the second period, Torey Krug notched his 11th of the season after following up on Reilly Smith’s whiffed attempt on the backhander. The Flames would pull starter Karri Ramo immediately following Krug’s tally in favor of former Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller.
Daniel Paille had a chance to make it 4-0 on the doorstep, but it was the same old story for the fourth line winger as he completely missed the net. Paille hasn’t scored since notching his only goal of the season back on November 21st against the Columbus Blue Jackets – a span of 34 games.
Dougie Hamilton had a very nice pass to Zdeno Chara to set him up for his fourth goal of the season back in the first period. His recent defensive woes continued, however, after allowing David Jones sneak up on him for his 11th of the season to put the Flames on the board.
The Bruins wasted a golden opportunity to regain a three-goal lead after failing to produce anything on a four minute power play to end the period. Johnny Gaudreau was called for high sticking David Pastrnak, which marked his first career penalty in the NHL The Flames came in killing off their last 16 power plays and simply didn’t give the B’s man advantage much room to work with.
The Flames have a +32 goal differential in the third period. The Bruins will need to generate some chances and try to get that all important fourth goal to dampen Calgary’s hopes on this night.
First period quick hits
The Bruins kicked off the second game of their five-game road trip with a different lineup as Matt Bartkowski returned to the lineup for the first time since December 31, 2014. Bartkowksi logged 4:15 of ice time in the first. The lowest first period time on ice among Bruins’ defensemen.
The B’s penalty kill in the first period was as good as it gets. Not only did the Bruins not allow any scoring changes while Chris Kelly was in the box, but Patrice Bergeron picked off an errant pass from T.J. Brodie just inside the red line and eventually connected with Brad Marchand on a two-on-one for Marchand’s 16th goal of the season and first shorthanded tally in 2014-15.
A great start for the Bruins who dominated the Flames through the opening 20 minutes. Featuring a combination of new lines the Bruins out shot (8-7) and out scored (2-0) the Flames thanks to goals by Marchand and Zdeno Chara. The goal snapped a 14-game drought for Captain Z.
Playing alongside Chris Kelly and Carl Soderberg, David Pastrnak had a solid period. The 18-year old forward picked up an assist on Chara’s rocket and nearly had a goal on a breakaway attempt, but his bid was turned away on a nice save from Flames’ goalie Karri Ramo.
