Bruins special teams shine in 3-1 win over Stars

It seemed as if the Boston Bruins dominated play the entire night Tuesday night in Dallas even when trailing early in the second period. Claude Julien’s team answered back scoring three unanswered goals to beat Tyler Seguin and company in the Lone Star state, 3-1.
The Black and Gold were playing with high energy, they were getting bodies to the net and they were playing with a purpose – unlike their performance Saturday night against the Blue Jackets. But, the real story of the night was the efficiency of the Bruins special teams in a game where penalties came in bunches.
Tuukka Rask (36 saves) was the B’s best penalty killer on the night saving 16 shots on the Stars’ opportunities with the man-disadvantage, but give credit to Zdeno Chara who played 5:23 on the penalty kill and Kevan Miller who put in over four minutes of shorthanded work as well.
“We did a good job,” Rask said about the penalty kill. “We blocked a lot of shots and took seams away. It was a fun game to watch I bet. A lot of chances both sides, a lot of power-plays and we were lucky to get a couple of goals there.”
The B’s killed off all six penalties by blocking shots, putting sticks in the passing lanes and by being physical along the boards. They have now killed off 33 of 35 penalties in the month of January.
“Obviously Tuukka was good,” said Gregory Campbell after scoring his fifth goal of the season, while also notching 4:53 of shorthanded time on ice. “He made some big saves. They like to play lateral and fast. Our penalty kill was good too. So, overall it was a pretty good effort.”
Dougie Hamilton scored a huge power-play goal to give his team some breathing room in the third period. The B’s were 1-for-4 on the power-play on the night.
Power-play goals on the road were very hard to come by for the Black and Gold, but Hamilton fired a wrister past Kari Lehtonen with help from Carl Soderberg on the screen.
“When you have repetition, you get more chances and shots,” Hamilton told NESN’s Guerin Austin postgame. “I think we had four power-plays tonight, so we had a better chance of scoring than if we had one power-play. It was nice to get one.”
All-in-all, Julien was satisfied with the team’s energy and special teams’ performance after their lackluster effort Saturday night.
“I thought our guys did a great job during the penalty kill,” Julien said to Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley afterwards. “We cut a lot of back door plays. They like to do that a lot and it was a good job from our guys being aware and having good sticks. Then, we get the power-play goal late.”
The Black and Gold received a big two points away from TD Garden shutting down old friend Seguin, who was a minus-1. It was because of their stingy style of play and timely scoring, but also credit the special teams and all personnel involved. It made a serious impact on the night.
