Second period quick hits:
The Bruins began the period with 1:29 on the power-play but could not capitalize on the man advantage. It was the B’s first power-play of the night. Claude Julien’s team received the next power-play of the game as well and could not convert. The team had one shot on two power-plays. The Black and Gold are now 19-109 on the power-play this season.
The B’s PK has stepped up after allowing a goal on their first penalty kill of the night. They have silenced the Blue Jackets last two chances. Rask was huge in the process making two key stops, one on Johansen again. Rask has 16 saves in all to this point.
David Pastrnak watch: The 18 year-old has been much of a non-factor in this one to this point. In 9:32 of ice time, Pastrnak has zero points and zero shots on net. In his last five periods, he has only one shot on net. In his game against the Flyers, he had seven.
The B’s fourth line is bringing nothing to the table through two periods. The trio of Craig Cunningham, Gregory Campbell and Jordan Caron have combined for one shot on goal while flirting with danger in the last few minutes of the second period from icing the puck two consecutive times. It’s Caron’s first game since January 8th against the Devils.
Bergeron is 10-13 (77%) from the face-off dot. The centerman has played 12:16 while playing a team-high (along with Kevan Miller) 2:45 on the penalty kill. Bergeron also leads the Black and Gold with four shots. It’s another strong game for Bergeron despite not stuffing the stat sheet to this point.
First period quick hits:
Blue Jackets’ Curtis McElhinney is making his first start since January 4th at Colorado where he notched a 4-3 win. He holds a 3-6-1 record on the season and has been the backup for the past four games in favor of Sergei Bobrovsky. Tuukka Rask got the nod for the Boston Bruins who is unbeatable in his last 10 starts (7-0-3). Rask hasn’t lost a game in regulation since December 19th against the Winnipeg Jets.
Ryan Johansen extended his point streak to 13 games as he gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead on the power-play with 12:03 remaining in the first period. It was a wrist shot that beat Rask top shelf. It was Johansen’s team-leading 17th goal of the season.
The lead didn’t last long for the Blue Jackets as Carl Soderberg scored his 10th goal of the season tying the game at 1-1. Chris Kelly got his 15th assist of the season while Loui Eriksson notched his 18th assist of the year.
Daniel Paille was slotted in alongside Patrice Bergeron and Reilly Smith in the absence of Brad Marchand. The trio combined for six shots in the first 20 minutes and looked to build immediate chemistry as the period prolonged. Some of the better scoring chances of the night came from this second line.
Dougie Hamilton had a tough first period as he committed two penalties one resulting in a goal by Johansen. He also got beat on a few different occasions. The third-year defenseman did have two hits and two shots on net, but he was more of a liability out there in the first 20 minutes than an asset.
