Patrice Bergeron does it all in OT win over Penguins

In a game in which the Boston Bruins desperately needed two points, Patrice Bergeron made sure that they got them as he netted a pair of goals including the game-winner in overtime to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2.

Bergeron put the Black and Gold ahead in the second period scoring his ninth goal of the season on a nice play by Daniel Paille. The B’s were still being outplayed as they trailed in shots 26-14 after two periods of play, which has been the occurring theme lately.

It seemed as if it was déjà vu for the Bruins again as a sloppy start to a period cost them a goal and the lead as Evgeni Malkin scored 14 seconds into the third period – his third tally in two games vs. the B’s this season – to tie the game at 2-2.

The game ended in a tie during regulation with the B’s earning a point which they are very familiar with as of late, but their desperation proved that they needed to get two points on this night. Bergeron took matters into his own hands as great players do.

As the Black and Gold worked the puck around the point, Bergeron was battling for position in front of Marc-Andre Fleury. He was pushing and he was shoving to get to that dirty area. As Milan Lucic, let it fly to the net, Bergeron had his position and redirected Lucic’s shot past Fleury for the victory.

“I thought it was inconclusive and they had a good goal on the ice,” Bergeron told reporters after the game. “I was pretty confident I was below the crossbar.”

Bergeron now has three goals in his last two games and now leads the B’s in points on the season with 30 in 40 games. His 10 goals rank him second on the team only behind his line mate Brad Marchand.

One day after CEO Charlie Jacobs called the B’s out for their performance for being “unacceptable”, their leaders responded. Zdeno Chara netted the first goal to get the troops going and Bergeron took care of the rest.

It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but Bergeron and the rest of the Black and Gold found a way to get those all important two points.

“It wasn’t perfect by all means, but definitely a good effort and we found a way to get the big win,” Bergeron said to the media.

Bergeron had a great night for Claude Julien. Not only did he score a pair of goals, but he led all forwards with 21:34 of ice time and won 67 percent of his face-offs. In other words, it was another night at the office for No. 37.

His five shots on net were a team high, but it was what he did on the defensive end that stood out. He saw nearly three minutes of penalty kill time. Other than Tuukka Rask, one can argue Bergeron is their next best killer. He is in the same breath as Chara.

There is still some life left for the 2014-2015 Bruins and one of the main reasons why is the play and heart of Bergeron. He has been one of the more consistent players for Julien in all three zones, but that’s something everybody already knew.
