Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Sabres
Share
The Boston Bruins dropped the last game of their three-game road trip to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night, 2-1.
It wasn’t the best effort from the Black and Gold where they came out flat in the first period paired with allowing another late goal to end the second period from an opposing team. The B’s took a possible three points out of six on the road trip.
The Bruins are out of sync right now. They cannot find the back of the net and have only scored more than two goals once in their last five games. Peter Chiarelli could make a few moves if he wants to break up his “core” group, but that will have to wait until the holiday roster freeze ends on December 27th.
On Boston.com: Bruins offense sputtering from bad to worse
Tonight, the Black and Gold will look to get back on track against the Buffalo Sabres. It’s the perfect time for the B’s to beat up on an inferior team.
Claude Julien’s bunch has taken both meetings against the Sabres beating them both times at Buffalo with an aggregate of 7-2. It seems as if the B’s have no trouble scoring against their Atlantic Division rivals. Hopefully for Julien and company, their success against Buffalo continues.

Who to watch for Bruins: David Krejci
We all know David Krejci has missed a good chunk of the season due to a lower-body injury. But, if he is out there on the ice, he has to produce like the top line center that he is.
In his two most recent games back from injury, Krejci has registered zero points, a minus-2 rating and four shots on net. Julien referred to players looking for the “cute” play instead of putting the puck on net.
The Czech Republic native has been a culprit of that since his return. He hasn’t recorded a point since November 6th against the Oilers and hasn’t scored a goal since October 25th. Sure, he has missed 19 games on the year, but a player of Krejci’s caliber should be on the score sheet every night.
On Boston.com: Krejci’s return provides Bruins with stability
Sunday’s game against the Sabres could be just what the doctor ordered for Krejci. It would be his third game back from injury and a terrible defense to play against. The 28 year-old needs to get back to his playmaking ways while creating opportunities for his teammates and himself.
In his career against Buffalo, Krejci has 10 goals and 18 assists in 41 games.
Who to watch for Sabres: Tyler Ennis
The Buffalo Sabres may not have many playmakers on their side, but a player to keep an eye on Sunday night at TD Garden is Tyler Ennis. Ennis leads the Sabres in points with 22 in 33 games. His eight goals are second on the team next to Zemgus Girgensons while his 14 assists leads the squad.
In his last five games, the 25 year-old has contributed with five assists. In 23 career games against the Bruins, Ennis has five goals and 10 assists, but owns a minus-16 player rating. So, for better or for worse, the Black and Gold should keep tabs on Ennis.
Game Day Edge: Take advantage of home ice, score early and often
The Bruins will take the ice in front of their home crowd on Sunday night and they need to use that to their advantage.
Playing a team like the Sabres is a gift for a team that is struggling in all three zones at the moment. Scoring the first goal of this contest is crucial while keeping their foot on the gas pedal is even more important.
This is a game where the Black and Gold should dominate in all three-zones, special teams and goal tending. There simply isn’t an excuse. The B’s should score more than two goals and be in unfamiliar territory, but in a good way.
When scoring first this season, the B’s are 9-5-2. All four lines need to be rolling in this one and by the looks of the first two games against the Sabres, they should have no trouble defeating them on home ice.
