Same story, different verse for Bruins

NASHVILLE – Same story, different verse.
That is the story of the 2014-15 Boston Bruins.
Sure they can take some positives out of getting a point against the Predators in their 3-2 shootout loss on Tuesday night in the Bridgestone Arena. From crashing the net and getting chances on all-world goalie Pekka Rinne to their physical play between the boards, and Reilly Smith responding after late second and early third period goals from Mike Fisher and Mike Ribeiro, respectively, from there was some good in getting a point.
All that good, though, is getting trumped by their free fall in the Eastern Conference standings. The Black and Gold have now dropped eight of their last 10 games and find themselves one point behind the Florida Panthers – who defeated the Washington Capitals in a 20-round shootout – for the last wild card spot.
“I think we played a decent game tonight against a team that’s been pretty good,” head coach Claude Julien said. “We had some real great opportunities that I think against most goaltenders, would have probably gone in.
“I think we had some good net front presence. We’re just lacking that extra point that we’re hoping to get.”
From a mix of Providence call ups that weren’t ready for prime time, to Julien’s shuffling of the lineups and the team’s injuries, the Bruins are in a search for consistency. But their biggest problem is putting the puck in the net.
Through the first seven games of December, the Bruins have scored a grand total of 12 goals. They might get a boost whenever David Krejci returns, but until then they are working with what they have.
“Things haven’t come easy for us and we have to find a way to get some wins here,” Milan Lucic, who scored his sixth of the season to give the B’s a 1-0 lead at 4:04 of the second period. “You look at the standings, we’re behind the eight-ball. It hasn’t been an easy year at all and we need to find ways to grind it out, start getting wins and start feeling good about ourselves.”
The product that the Bruins have right now is beyond frustrating to the 20 men who don the Spoked B. The only way they can cure that at this rate is to find a way to get rewarded with a 60-minute effort with some wins.
“When you’re struggling, wins are tough to come by. You aren’t getting the bounces, and you’re having a tough time scoring” said goaltender Tuukka Rask, who made 38 saves – including 20 in the third period and overtime – in the losing effort. “You really have to grind it out and get that win then keep that going in the right direction. I think that’s what we need right now, a good, solid 60-minute game.”
