Bruins first line shines in thrilling victory over Sharks

If there was ever a statement win so far this season for the Boston Bruins it was Tuesday night against the San Jose Sharks at TD Garden.
After trailing 3-2 after two periods, the Black and Gold fought their way back to a 5-3 victory highlighted by a seven point night by the first line of Milan Lucic, David Krejci and Seth Griffith.
It was a tough first period for this line as there were a few giveaways in the neutral zone, but they answered the bell from that point forward including Griffith’s first career NHL goal, which may have been the turning point for the B’s in the third period.
“It was great,” Griffith said about his first career tally. “I’ve had a couple of chances the past few games so it’s great to get the first one out of the way.”
Griffith has been back and forth between Providence and Boston a lot lately, but he making a strong case to stay with the big club especially by contributing on the first line alongside Krejci and Lucic.
“When he was playing well, I thought he made some great plays,” Head coach Claude Julien said about Griffith. “Again, this isn’t because he scored, I think he scored because he played well. I thought he was pretty good. I just thought about leaving him there. If those guys are going to get better, sometimes you’ve got to put them in those positions when you feel they’re doing well enough to warrant that.”
“We’re starting to get a little chemistry going so it’s good to see, but it’s not too hard playing with two great players like that.” Griffith added about playing with Lucic and Krejci.
When asked about Griffith producing while the team struggles offensively, he immediately gave credit to his line mates.
“Yeah for sure, but Looch and Krech had a couple of points each too,” Griffith said. “It wasn’t a bad night for anybody. It’s good to see that they’re coming along as well.”
Lucic had another strong performance for the Black and Gold tallying three assists on the night.
It seems as if “Looch” is starting to find his bearings again moving his feet and being physical for a full 60 minutes.
“Feeling a lot better and a lot more confident on the ice,” Lucic said after his team’s 5-3 win. “Hope to get a few more shots on net, that’s probably the one area where I need to work at more on my game. Probably being a little bit selfish and getting those shots on net. So, if I do that, the goals will comes. I think as far as moving my feet and getting in those areas and being strong and hard on the puck and all that type of stuff is definitely over the last week has gotten a lot better.”
On a night where Patrice Bergeron’s line was off, a total of two shots both by Brad Marchand and a minus-six rating collectively, the first line carried the mail, although it was a complete team effort.
“Yeah, well they’ve been great the last few games ever since Dave (Krejci) came back and Looch is an animal out there,” Marchand said of his team’s first line performance. “When he wants to play his game no one can stop him, so it’s always fun to see him play like that and hopefully he can continue to play like that.”
The B’s first line certainly gave the team a lift Tuesday, but when they face the Islanders Thursday night, the Bergeron or the Loui Eriksson line. You never know.
Still, it’s a great sign that the first line is starting to come together and produce like it should, hopefully allowing Bruins fans to forget Jarome Iginla’s name.
