Svedberg shuts out Buffalo, continues success

After a tough outing on the back end of a back-to-back in Montreal from work horse Tuukka Rask, the Boston Bruins turned to their backup Niklas Svedberg in Buffalo. Svedberg was sensational on the night posting his first career shutout and earning his first win of the 2014 season. He turned away all 32 shots thrown on him by the Sabres.

Winning this game for the Black and Gold was crucial. It meant they took four points out of a possible six on a mini three-game road trip. Svedberg continues to give the B’s exactly what Chad Johnson gave them last season as the back up to Rask.

“It’s a good feeling right now for us to go home with two wins out of three, and it’s two good wins for us on the road trip,” Svedberg said. “We can build off that.”

Owner of a .969 save percentage and 0.91 goals against average which are both good for sixth in the National Hockey League, the Swedish goaltender was only concentrating on getting the two points for his team.

“Getting the win tonight was huge for us and I was happy to get the shut out too,” Svedberg said after his team’s 4-0 victory.

Coming off a devastating loss to the Avalanche in his last start, Svedberg stood tall all night long and had no carry over from a demoralizing loss which was not his fault.

“Maybe they had some shots early in the game because they had some power-plays, but we had a good penalty kill and we were able to score some goals in the first and build off that so I think we played a good game all throughout the game,” Svedberg said.

Head coach Claude Julien was very satisfied with his goaltender’s performance in an important game for his team before they head back home to face the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night at TD Garden.

“He’s been good,” Julien said. “He came in the other night cold and had to make some saves and the first game he played as well so I’m pretty happy with the way he has handled himself. In that first game he lost, he was really good as well. It was tough to give that goal with a half of second left and we know it wasn’t his fault. We’ve been fortunate that we have a good goaltender in Tuukka (Rask) and everyone who comes in continues to do the job behind him so that’s great.”

The 25 year-old goaltender has had a great start to the season, but it’s all about if he can sustain that success. He will be relied upon to spell Rask throughout the year. Although Rask is off to a tough start to the year with a .870 save percentage and a 2.90 goals against average, we can’t figure to see Svedberg anymore than we see him on a weekly basis. Rask is still the top dog, but Svedberg is certainly playing at a very high level right now and can be trusted in any situation.

The Black and Gold have games against the Sharks, Islanders and Maple Leafs this upcoming week. Expect to see Svedberg in one of them.
