After concluding their last round of negotiations early Sunday morning, the NHL owners and NHLPA ended their 113-day lockout and agreed to start an abbreviated season in 2013. While the schedule has not been announced quite yet, it is expected that the league will conduct a 48 or 50-game schedule.
But while hockey fans will still have to wait a little bit to start the season, there was still plenty of reaction on Facebook and Twitter – from media pundits and players to the fans. Let’s take a look at the best responses on the end of the NHL Lockout.
We’ll begin with the players reaction on the Twitterverse. Embedded below are tweets of sympathy from fellow Bruin teammates Andrew Ference (@Ferknuckle) and Tyler Seguin (@tylerseguin92), while Massachusetts native and Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney (@ryanwhitney6), who had something to say about report from a member of the Boston media last month.
As players we can now do what we do best. Proudly pull on our jerseys and play with complete passion for our cities and fans. — Andrew Ference (@Ferknuckle) January 6, 2013
I hope that we can replace the intense negativity brought on our sport with a reminder of how great it can be when the action is on the ice. — Andrew Ference (@Ferknuckle) January 6, 2013
From my grandparents to our B’s fans, I am deeply sorry that we had to miss so much hockey. All we can do now is play our hearts out for you — Andrew Ference (@Ferknuckle) January 6, 2013
Can’t wait to get back on the Garden ice for the best fans in the league — Tyler Seguin (@tylerseguin92) January 6, 2013
Steve Burton…justtttt a bit outside — Ryan Whitney (@ryanwhitney6) January 6, 2013
Speaking of the Boston media, here’s some of the better tweets from the Bruins scribes the last 24 hours, including CSNNE’s Joe Haggerty (@HackswithHaggs) and ESPN Boston’s James Muprhy (@MurphysLaw74).
Ice was already down at @tdgarden when I went there Friday to do TV hit during Celtics game. So building is ready & raring to go #BruinsTalk — Joe Haggerty (@HackswithHaggs) January 6, 2013
Over/under on groin injuries in first two weeks of NHL season? — Jimmy Murphy (@MurphysLaw74) January 6, 2013
On a national basis, #Dregerface seems to be doing quite well after making its debut earlier in the week, while #BoomerKnew could be trending soon. My former colleague at Inside Hockey and ex-Detroit Red Wings social media guru, Jake Duhaime (@jakeduhaime) threw in this pop culture reference about the fans’ relationship with the NHL.
The NHL = Chris Brown … NHL fans = Rihanna … Your worth as a consumer was beaten for the last 113 days. You will come back anyway. — Jake Duhaime (@jakeduhaime) January 6, 2013
To end the Twitter portion of the article, what would a social media article be without a reference – and a self promotion – from former pro wrestler The Iron Sheik (@the_ironsheik).
because of NHL you buy my Team sheikie T shirt theironsheik.org or you are worse than Gary Bettman and the Mel Gibson sister — The Iron Sheik (@the_ironsheik) January 6, 2013
And yes, we heard what you had to say about the end of the lockout on the Bruins Daily and Boston Bruins Examiner Facebook pages. We have included all your responses below (apologies for the fuzzy images, but click on the screens for a better view).
