Throughout the offseason, TheHubofHockey will be posting daily report cards on each individual of the 2010-11 NHL Stanley Cup Champions, Boston Bruins.

In order of jersey number, each player will be highlighted. In today’s edition, we have Bruins Forward No. 63 Brad Marchand

    Name: Brad Marchand
    Position: Forward
    Shoots: Left
    Age: 23
    Height: 5’9″
    Weight: 183 lbs.
    Contract: RFA In 2010-11

    2010-11 NHL Season stats:
    Regular season: 77 GP, 21-20–41, plus-25, 51 PIM, 149 SOG
    Playoffs: 25 GP, 11-8–19, plus-12, 40 PIM, 61 SOG

    Line combinations (dobberhockey.com):
EV: Patrice Bergeron, Mark Recchi 42.69 % Bergeron, Recchi 65.09 % in post season
PP:  Bergeron, Recchi, Tyler Seguin 21.29 % Bergeron, Recchi, Rich Peverley 27.12 % in post season
PK: Gregory Campbell 54.12 % Bergeron 59.5 % in post season

Anthony”s Take: Marchand got off to a slow start for the Bruins, but as the calendar flipped to 2011, No. 63 caught fire and became a key player for the Black and Gold. Marchand finished the year with 41 points (21 goals), and was also tied for third in the NHL with five shorthanded goals.

Playing in his first career NHL playoffs, Marchand was one of the Bruins best. No. 63 finished the post season with 19 points (11 goals) and scored twice in the Bruins Cup clinching Game 7 win over the Vancouver Canucks

Not only can Marchand light the lamp and make plays happen, he can easily get under your skin. His agitator style of play, along with natural talent will be fun to watch over the next several years, providing the Bruins reach a deal with Marchand who is currently a restricted free agent.

    Grade: A-

Rosie’s grade: Brad Marchand is one of those hockey players who you love to have on your team and you hate to play against. Luckily for the Bruins, the feisty forward at 5’9″ was one who was instrumental to their Stanley Cup run.

The former third round pick in 2006 surpassed many expectations when he tallied 21 goals and 20 assists in 77 games during the 2010-11 season. As a result, Marchand was voted by the fans as the recipient of this year’s 7th player award, given to the player who performs beyond expectations via fan voting. In the playoffs, Marchand was even more valuable as one of the Bruins’ top offensive performers with 19 points (11 goals, 8 assists).

On top of his drive to the net, Marchand often got underneath the skin of the Bruins’ opponents often. Although it seemed to work against Marchand, for the most part the Bruins benefited from Marchand’s presence.

Being on a line with Patrice Bergeron and Mark Recchi gave the trio an extra dimension. Marchand, Recchi and Bergeron had great chemistry throughout the year and was arguably the best line for the Bruins during the Cup run.

Marchand is obviously an RFA, but don’t expect No. 63 to don another sweater in 2011-12.
