(Photo: Bridget Samuels) The Bruins have a chance to clinch a playoff spot tonight, but they'll have to do it without Dennis Seidenberg in the lineup (day-to-day)

What a difference a few weeks makes.

The last time the Boston Bruins faced off against the Washington Capitals back on March 10, the Black and Gold were neck and neck with the Ottawa Senators in the Northeast Division race. The Black and Gold dropped their first of four straight contests against captain Alex Ovechkin and company, which led to the Sens jumping up to first place in the Northeast.

Lately, however, the Bruins have seemed to regain their swagger with five wins in their last six and have regained a five-point lead in the division standings. And tonight, with Washington (ninth in the Eastern Conference) in town for the final meeting of the season, the Bruins can officially clinch a playoff spot for the fifth straight season.

(Photo: Bridget Samuels/) Tim Thomas won for the fourth time in his last five starts last night when he shut down the Lightning in the Bruins 5-2 victory in Boston last night

There have been many whispers around Boston stating a case to bench Tim Thomas so he can be fresh for the playoff and Stanley Cup run, but Claude Julien continues to ride his number one goalie with six games remaining in the season.

Thomas is 4-1 in his last five games after previously losing five out of his last seven. There was much panic in Bruins nation, but Thomas has silenced every one and he has returned to form with the playoffs just around the corner.

Thomas got his most recent win versus the Tampa Lightning where he was stellar turning away 16 of 18 shots in the win. The 2011 Venzina winner talked about the saves he made on Steven Stamkos and Teddy Purcell right before the Bruins scored their third goal.

Bruins drop West Coast trip opener

(Getty Images) Zdeno Chara's 11th goal of the season wasn't enough as the Bruins dropped the opener of a three game West Coast swing to the Sharks 2-1

The Boston Bruins started a mini three game west coast road trip Thursday night in San Jose and Tim Thomas found himself between the pipes for a 14th straight game. The Bruins dropped their opening contest to the Sharks 2-1.

A late third period goal by Zdeno Chara (his 11th) was not enough as  goals by Joe Pavelski (his 27th) and Daniel Winnik (his 6th) were enough for the Sharks. The Sharks dominated this game from start to finish outshooting the Bruins 20-9 at one point through two periods.

Tim Thomas played well enough to get the win, but Antti Niemi was more impressive stopping 16 of the Bruins 17 shots. Thomas turned away 25 of 27 in the loss.

For the second time in less than a week the Bruins put themselves in a early hole as they once again spotted their opponent an early two-goal lead.

First period goals by Alexander Semin and Matt Hendricks less than halfway into the opening frame put the Black and Gold behind the eight ball once again.

“We were just flat” said Johnny Boychuk who scored the Bruins third and final goal.
