(Photo: Bridget Samuels/Ikeastan) After what was a great run in Boston, it's time for the Thomas era in Boston to come to an end.

In life all great things must come to an end, and that statement is certainly true in professional sports. As much as we don’t want it to happen athletes come and go, and for the Bruins, and Tim Thomas, it’s finally time for Thomas to move on.

Now before you curse me, call me a fool, or stop reading this article, please just hear me out.

This thought has nothing to do with the White House. Nothing to do with Thomas saying they, their, me, I, we, us or anything like that in a post game interview. Nothing to do with Thomas walking across the Bruins logo—an unwritten rule in the Bruins locker room—. Nothing to do with what type of soda Thomas drinks, what flavor ice cream Thomas orders, or what TV shows Thomas has on his DVR, this is strictly about hockey, and about what’s best for the Boston Bruins.

(Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) The Washington Capitals used an overtime Game 7 goal from Joel Ward to eliminate the defending Stanley Cup Champions

After six hard fought one goal games it shouldn’t shock anyone that thanks to overtime for the fourth time in the series, Game 7 was a one goal game, unfortunately for the Bruins, it’s the last one goal game they will play this season.

Joel Ward scored 2:57 into overtime as the Washington Capitals dethroned the defending Stanley Cup Champions in their own building.

“I went for a change and Knubs [Mike Knuble] made a big block there and I assumed we had a little bit of a break up ice so try to take a chance and I knew he was going to take it to the rack and I just tried to follow it up as best as I could” said Ward. “You know, I just saw the puck laying there and I just took a whack at it and it went in.”

(Photo: S. Babineau) Tim Thomas only made 17 saves in the Bruins' 1-0 victory, but delivered some clutch stops on Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson when it mattered the most

For 40 minutes of the Boston Bruins’ 1-0 overtime win over the Washington Capitals in Game 1, Tim Thomas could have taken a nap, sipped on a pina colada, make another status update on Facebook or find another way to relax. After all, the reigning Vezina and Conn Smythe winner only saw five shots on goal through those first two periods.

In the third period, however, Thomas was stellar, again, when called upon.

(Photo: Bridget Samuels) Tim Thomas returned to his Vezina (and Conn Smythe) winning form on Sunday with a brilliant performance in the team's 2-1 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden

Once again, Bruins coach Claude Julien has his team playing their best hockey at the right time.

Following a solid 6-3 win over the Islanders Saturday afternoon in Long Island, Tim Thomas showed signs of his Conn Smythe form from last year and carried the Black and Gold to a 2-1 win over the Rangers — for the first time this year — Sunday night at Madison Square Garden. The two victories propelled the hockey club from Causeway Street to their fifth straight playoff appearance, and, more importantly, their third Northeast Division title in five years.
