BOSTON — In Game 4, coach Claude Julien shuffled his top two lines — shifting Tyler Seguin with Milan Lucic and David Krejci and Rich Peverley with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand — in hopes of creating more offense for his Boston Bruins. That result did not pay dividends, however, as the Washington Capitals tied the best-of-seven first round series at two games apiece with their 2-1 victory Thursday night.

At practice Friday, Julien took it a step further with his line changes.

BOSTON — It was not the end result that the Bruins were looking for, but it’s at least one point in the standings.

While that might sound like a losers mentality (to some), the fact is it could have been a lot worse than the 3-2 shootout loss they suffered in the hands of the Washington Capitals Thursday night at the TD Garden.

“It’s a disapointing loss, but I liked the way we came back,” said forward David Krejci, who pulled the Bruins within one after deflecting a Zdeno Chara shot at 16:50 of the third period. “We just need to try to take the positive out of this game and move on.”

BOSTON — Prior to negotiating his new contract, Shawn Thornton expressed his desire to dawn the spoked B for the foreseeable future.

With the official announcement of his two-year contract extension Monday worth $2.2 million, Thornton got his wish.

“Everyone knows when the first offer was made, I guess it was in the media so it took little time,” said the 34-year-old veteran. “But I’ve always said I’ve wanted to stay here in Boston; it’s home now. I’m very happy to get this done and be around for a couple of more years.”

Claude Julien wins 400th career game with Bruins; Zdeno Chara approaches another milestone

(AP/Charles Krupa) Head coach Claude Julien manned the bench for the 400th time in Boston last night, as the Bruins thumped the Maple Leafs 8-0 at the TD Garden.

On a night where Phil Kessel dominated the headlines of coming back to Boston, Claude Julien was coaching in his 400th career game with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins did not let their leader down stomping the Toronto Maple Leafs 8-0. Julien has 221 career wins with the Bruins with an overall coaching resume that reads 339-216-10-72.

Julien was not aware of the milestone and admitted that he does not pay attention to those types of storylines.

“I didn’t (know it was) until somebody mentioned it to me this morning,” Julien said. “I really didn’t know and they mentioned it to me after the press conference and I had no idea. I don’t keep track of that stuff, but one thing I’ll tell you is if you’re going to coach 400 games to get that kind of win, I’ll take any night.”

Bruins falling behind the 8-ball

BOSTON — Call it a midseason slump. Call it getting through the February doldrums. Call it the pre-trade deadline jitters.

Call it whatever you want, but the fact is, the Boston Bruins are not playing their best hockey with 28 games left in the 2011-12 campaign.

Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Henrik Lundqvist (42 saves in the shutout) and the New York Rangers was just another example of the Bruins’ subpar play in the last several weeks.
