Entering the final day of the National Hockey League’s regular season this past Saturday the Bruins knew they had nothing to play for as they had the second seed in the East all locked up. With that in mind the B’s, fans and media alike paid close attention to three games.

The Bruins first round opponent was still up in the air as the Bruins knocked off the Buffalo Sabres in a shootout, but just hours later things were a lot clearer.

After victories by the Capitals over the Rangers and Panthers over the Hurricanes combined with a Senators loss to the Devils the Capitals leaped into the seventh seed earning themselves a first round date with the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

The Bruins will have their hands full on Tuesday night at TD Garden, but it will not matter conference wise as the home team locked up the number two seed in the East in this years Stanley Cup playoffs Sunday night when they beat the New York Rangers in New York 2-1.

For the Pittsburgh Penguins this game has playoff implications on the line as the Pens are clinging to the number four seed with 102 points, just one point ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers. Those same two teams meet Saturday in Pittsburgh to wrap up the season in what is almost guaranteed to be a first round Stanley Cup playoff match-up preview

What a difference a few weeks makes.

The last time the Boston Bruins faced off against the Washington Capitals back on March 10, the Black and Gold were neck and neck with the Ottawa Senators in the Northeast Division race. The Black and Gold dropped their first of four straight contests against captain Alex Ovechkin and company, which led to the Sens jumping up to first place in the Northeast.

Lately, however, the Bruins have seemed to regain their swagger with five wins in their last six and have regained a five-point lead in the division standings. And tonight, with Washington (ninth in the Eastern Conference) in town for the final meeting of the season, the Bruins can officially clinch a playoff spot for the fifth straight season.

After a 2-1 road trip through California the Bruins return to Garden ice tonight where they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning are coming off a 5-3 win last night over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Bruins last played Sunday night where they knocked off the Ducks in Anaheim behind Marty Turco’s 25 saves.

Winners in four of their last five, the Bruins look to win their third in a row for the first time since late December. The Lightning who most likely will miss the playoffs just one year after coming within one Game 7 victory of the Stanley Cup Finals have won three in a row.

Tim Thomas—32-19-0 2.40 .920— will be in net for the Bruins. After getting the start in Philly last night Dwayne Roloson—11-14-2 3.65 .885— will once again be between the pipes for the Lightning.
