BOSTON — The Boston-New York rivalry (in general) is always something to look forward to for sports fans of both cities. Tuesday’s game between the Bruins and Rangers is no exception.

Coming in to their Jan. 21 tilt at the TD Garden — the first meeting of the season — the Bruins were looking to surpass the Rangers in the Eastern Conference standings. However, the Blueshirts capitalized on a Andrew Ference major for hitting Ryan McDonagh from behind, and Marian Gaborik scored the game-winner at 4:56 of overtime to extend their lead to two points in the standings.

Fast forward almost a month later. The Black and Gold have been caught in mediocrity and the Rangers have a seven-point cushion in the standings; going 7-2-1 in their last 10.

Case in point, this is a game for the Rangers to put even more distance in the standings, and for the Bruins to get some momentum before their six-game road trip.

BOSTON — After receiving a three-game suspension for hitting Ryan McDonagh from behind in their 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Rangers a couple of weeks ago, Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference returns to the lineup for Thursday’s contest against the Carolina Hurricanes at the TD Garden.

Ference, who earned his first suspension in nearly 700 career NHL regular season games, will play for the first time in two weeks and will likely battle through some rust in his first game since Jan. 21 (before the All-Star break) — a span of 10 days.

Lost in the controversy that was Tim Thomas choosing not to join his Bruins teammates in yesterday’s meet and great at the White House with President Obama is the fact that the Bruins have a hockey game to play tonight, a pretty important one.

For the past week and a half the Black and Gold have been preaching how important it is for them to head into the All Star Break with momentum. After a tough overtime loss to the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon, the Bruins bounced back with a very ugly win in Philadelphia on Sunday.

For Tyler Seguin, it’s important his team plays a full 60 minutes and takes that momentum they’ve been talking about into the break.

The Bruins are set to hit the ice again tonight when they host their longtime rivals the Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins and Habs have gone in two complete directions since the Habs took both games of a home-and-home series back in October.

The Bruins sit second in the Eastern Conference just three points back of the conference leading Rangers. On the other hand the Canadiens are 12th in the East seven points behind the Washington Capitals for the eighth and final playoff spot.

The Bruins have won the previous two meetings by a combined score of 4-2.

(S. Babineau/Getty) Tuukka Rask is expected to get the start against the Calgary Flames Thursday night at the TD Garden

One night after a 6-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Newark, the Boston Bruins will look to win their second game in a row when they host the Calgary Flames at TD Garden for a 7 p.m. faceoff.

The Bruins won the last meeting over the Flames last February up in Calgary. This will be the only meeting between the two teams for the 2011-12 season.

Tuukka Rask will most likely get the start for the Black and Gold, while Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to get the nod between the pipes for Calgary.
