BOSTON — Call it a midseason slump. Call it getting through the February doldrums. Call it the pre-trade deadline jitters.

Call it whatever you want, but the fact is, the Boston Bruins are not playing their best hockey with 28 games left in the 2011-12 campaign.

Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Henrik Lundqvist (42 saves in the shutout) and the New York Rangers was just another example of the Bruins’ subpar play in the last several weeks.

Many hockey fans out there — myself included — are not huge fans of the shootout. The Boston Bruins on the other hands, are fans — very big fans in fact.

After today’s 4-3 shootout win over the Nashville Predators, the Bruins are now 7-1 in the shootout on the 2011-12 NHL season.

Tyler Seguin and Patrice Bergeron scored the only two goals in the shootout helping the Bruins bounce back from their worst loss of the season against the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night.

Zdeno Chara is known league wide as one of the National Hockey League’s premier defensemen, and will be out there pretty much at all times against the other team’s top line.

Chara and the Bruins had a tall task this afternoon when Evgeni Malkin, James Neal and company came into town for a Saturday afternoon matinee with the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

Heading into today’s tilt with the Bruins, Malkin and Neal were tied with Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks for second in league in goals with 27 each, six behind league leader Steven Stamkos.

BOSTON – If the Boston Bruins were portrayed as Superman, then the Carolina Hurricanes have provided the kryptonite.

Behind a 47-save shutout from goaltender Cam Ward the lowly Canes completed the season sweep against the Black and Gold – second in the Eastern Conference – in their 3-0 victory Thursday night at the TD Garden.

Thomas thankful for cheers from home crowd

(Photo: Bridget Samuels/) Tim Thomas made his first start in Boston since "White House gate" and got a standing ovation from the sold out TD Garden crowd.

One of the many great things about this country is the ability to be free, but sometimes when people exercise their ability to use their freedom, it rubs people the wrong way, just ask Bruins goalie Tim Thomas about that statement.

Thomas sent the sports world —especially the Boston media— into an absolute frenzy last week when he exercised his freedom and chose not to join his Bruins teammates at the White House where they were honored by President Barack Obama for their Stanley Cup victory just a season ago.

Thomas addressed his decision on his Facebook page, simply stating he was not happy with the United States Government and therefore he would not attend the meet and greet.
