Backstrom suspended for Game 4

After receiving a match penalty at the end of the Boston Bruins’ 4-3 victory in Game 3, Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom earned a one-game suspension from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan for his cross-check on Rich Peverley at the 20-minute mark of the third period. NHL Playoffs continue to exceed expectations

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks who are two favorites to reach the Stanley Cup Finals find themselves down 3-0 in their respective series

Die hard and casual hockey fans alike will tell you nothing in sports beats playoff hockey, and after the opening weekend of the Stanley Cup Playoffs that statement still rings to be true, and then some.

The first 19 games of the National Hockey League’s second season have been some of the most entertaining hockey in a long time. It’s hard to remember a better start to the playoffs then the one we have witnessed thus far.

Let’s take a quick look at what’s going on around the league.

Thomas delivers…again

For 40 minutes of the Boston Bruins’ 1-0 overtime win over the Washington Capitals in Game 1, Tim Thomas could have taken a nap, sipped on a pina colada, make another status update on Facebook or find another way to relax. After all, the reigning Vezina and Conn Smythe winner only saw five shots on goal through those first two periods.

In the third period, however, Thomas was stellar, again, when called upon.

Horton to miss 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs with concussion

After appearing in his first postseason last year — scoring two overtime winners against the Montreal Canadiens in the first round (Games 5 and 7) and the only goal in Game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals last year against the Tampa Bay Lightning — Nathan Horton will miss the entire 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a concussion.

Returning to the lineup for the start of the 2011-12 season after sustaining a concussion from Vancouver Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, Horton played in 46 games this year tallying 32 points (17 goals, 15 assists) before sustaining another concussion from the hands of Philadelphia Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo back on Jan. 22.

All four members of the Bruins Daily crew, including your’s truly, submitted their picks for this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, which begin tomorrow night with the start of three first round series, Flyers-Penguins, Red Wings-Predators and Canucks-Kings.
