Brad Marchand discusses last year’s divided locker room in interview

Training Camp is just a few days away and the Boston Bruins would love nothing more than to move on from last season and focus on returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2015-16. Yet, there was still a need for a Bruins veteran to say a few words before completely putting last year behind him.
In an interview with CSSNE Bruins Insider Joe Haggerty, Marchand, along with defenseman Torey Krug, discussed how the division in the Bruins locker room impacted a team in a year that saw them miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
“It was different,” Marchand told Haggerty about the division in the locker room last year.
“In the past years, we were family, but for some reason this past year we were definitely a little bit divided and had different cliques. It could’ve been because we had a lot of guys coming up in different times from Providence; they felt a lot more together and it seemed like the older guys didn’t do a good job at integrating other guys. So it’s definitely a combination of things. This year we have to do a much better job collectively as a group to make sure we’re all one and we’re a unit that will transfer over to the ice that will allow us to play better hockey.”
Marchand didn’t call out any Bruin from last season publically. But it’s clear that the 2014-15 campaign was a sore spot for him and the 19 other players who donned the ‘spoked B.’
“It was really tough,” Marchand added about 2014-15. “In our group, with the team we have in this organization, we expect guys to come in every night and be prepared to lay their bodies on the line. The majority of the guys wanted nothing more to be in the playoffs last year and even if you have one passenger, that’s enough to ruin your chances.
“We didn’t have all [the] guys going. It was very disappointing. It put a lot more pressure on guys that already had a lot of pressure on them. You’ve got to look the guy beside you and know that he’s going to the job and you’re going to do the same.”
Many changes were made to the Bruins roster entering 2015-16 thanks to new GM Don Sweeney. Guys like Milan Lucic and Dougie Hamilton were dealt while the team added Dorchester native Jimmy Hayes and former Duck Matt Beleskey (to name a couple). They still have plenty of questions that need to be answered before the start of the regular season, but it’s clear that a repeat performance would be unacceptable to the B’s and their fans.
“It was tough, difficult and frustrated,” Marchand added about 2014-15. “Hopefully we don’t have that this year, and we can be accountable to do our jobs.”
